In Danish there is a word which sums up the act of coming together with friends and family, lighting candles, keeping warm, eating good things and generally feeling at harmony with the world. The word is hygge (pronounced hoo-guh) and last week I photographed a wedding which oozed hygge.
Susie and Tim wanted a small, cozy affair for their closest friends and family so they took over Monachyle Mhor, Scotland’s loveliest farmhouse hotel, for the day and night. They put on the coolest and classiest DIY-converted-barn-low-key weddings I’ve ever seen.
I received this lovely thank you note from Susie and Tim, which made me smile from ear to ear:
“How can we begin to thank you? You could not have been more delightful or charming to us – and our guests- throughout the whole process of planning and then shooting our special day.
Everyone has been talking about how much they enjoyed meeting you and we have to let you into a secret: Susie hates being photographed, but the way you made her feel is apparent in every frame.
You were the ultimate professional, and your pictures will be a source of constant delight for the rest of our lives. Much love, Susie & Tim xxx”
Enjoy this little summary of their perfect day:

The wedding was held in this converted barn, right next to a barn full of little piggies (who remained quiet throughout the ceremony!)

The interior of the barn was decorated by friend and family the night before the wedding

Having friends supply lots of the decorations and pretty things often makes for a super pretty wedding. (Of course it helps when one of your friends is Thomas Maxwell, who made this lovely bouquet for Susie)

Susie wore her mother’s mink coat as her something old

Susie and Tim had written their own Humanist ceremony, with all guests involved in telling the story of how it all came to be.

Unbeknown to Tim, Susie stood up to make the first speech – cue tears all round!

Susie and Tim, it was a pleasure and a joy to photograph your wedding! I wish you both a very married Christmas and look forward to showing you more soon!
