Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in Scotland for family photography. From dramatic hilltop views to hidden cobbled streets, beach walks, woodland adventures, and elegant gardens, there’s a perfect backdrop for every family story.
As a family photographer, I’m always looking for locations that not only photograph beautifully but also give families space to relax, explore, and genuinely enjoy time together. The best photos happen when children can play, parents can connect, and everyone feels comfortable.
Here are my favourite family photoshoot locations in and around Edinburgh — along with why they work so well for natural, relaxed family photography.
Here are some of the most beautiful places to capture your family in Edinburgh
1 – Calton Hill
If you want iconic Edinburgh views without a long hike, Calton Hill is hard to beat. The city skyline, historic monuments, and soft golden light make this location especially magical, especially at sunrise or sunset.
Why families love it:
- Easy access for young children
- Stunning panoramic views of Edinburgh
- Gorgeous golden-hour light
- Plenty of open space for kids to run around
Calton Hill works beautifully for both playful candid moments and timeless family portraits.

2 – Arthur’s Seat
For adventurous families, Arthur’s Seat offers one of the most breathtaking natural backdrops in Edinburgh. The rugged landscape feels wild and cinematic while still being right in the heart of the city.
This location is perfect for:
- Families with older children
- Families who love nature
- Relaxed walking sessions
- Epic sunset photographs
I usually recommend comfortable shoes and allowing plenty of time so children can explore at their own pace.
3 – Circus Lane & Stockbridge
Stockbridge has a softer, quieter feel than the city centre, and Circus Lane is one of Edinburgh’s most photogenic streets. The cobblestones, colourful flowers, ivy-covered houses, and charming architecture create a timeless European feel.
This area is ideal for:
- Young families with babies
- Elegant lifestyle portraits
- Short, relaxed sessions
- Families wanting an “Edinburgh” look without tourist crowds
We can also wander through nearby streets and along the Water of Leith for extra variety.

4 – Cammo Estate
One of my favourite “secret” places, Cammo Estate is wonderful for families who want a more natural woodland setting. There are open fields, forest paths, and beautiful seasonal colours year-round.
This location works especially well for:
- Energetic children
- Dog-friendly family sessions
- Autumn photography
- Relaxed documentary-style images
It feels peaceful and spacious, even at busier times of year.

5- Lauriston Castle
Lauriston Castle grounds are one of Edinburgh’s hidden gems. The gardens, woodland paths, and sea views give incredible variety in one location.
Why I love photographing families here:
- Beautiful in every season
- Quiet and relaxed atmosphere
- Ideal for children who love exploring
- Mix of formal gardens and natural scenery
The cherry trees in spring, and Autumn sessions here are especially stunning.

6 – Cramond Beach
Beach sessions are always full of movement and fun, and Cramond is one of my favourite coastal locations near Edinburgh.
Families love:
- Barefoot beach walks
- Children splashing and exploring
- Beautiful sunset light
- Relaxed candid moments
Beach sessions tend to feel playful and natural — perfect if you want less “posed” photography

7- Edinburgh Botanical Gardens
Beautiful landscaping, ancient trees, colourful plants… Edinburgh Botanics is stunning year-round. I have done many photographs there over the years, and two shoots are never the same.
Added bonus, if it does rain the Glasshouse offers a Plan B to escape the rain!
Perfect for:
- Relaxed walking sessions
- Families with younger children
- Natural light portraits
- Seasonal photography

8 – South Queensferry
South Queensferry combines coastal charm with iconic Scottish scenery. The views of the Forth Bridges create a dramatic backdrop while the shoreline and harbour area add plenty of character.
This is a fantastic location for:
- Sunset sessions
- Coastal portraits
- Families wanting a uniquely Scottish backdrop
The mix of water, architecture, and open sky photographs beautifully in all seasons.
9 -Museums, Galleries & Glasshouses
Indoor public spaces can also make beautiful backdrops for family photography, especially on colder or wetter days.
Great indoor-style locations can include:
- Art galleries with soft natural light
- Museums with beautiful architecture
- The glasshouses at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
- Historic indoor spaces with character and texture
These locations work especially well for families wanting something a little different while still staying warm and dry.
Indoor sessions often feel calm, intimate, and timeless – and Scottish weather becomes part of the adventure rather than a problem.
10 – At home
Home sessions are warm, personal, and wonderfully relaxed. There’s no pressure to rush out the door, and children usually feel happiest in familiar surroundings.
Some of my favourite at-home moments include:
- Reading stories on the sofa
- Playing in the kids’ bedrooms
- Cuddles under blankets
- Slow, cozy weekend mornings
These sessions are less about posing and more about documenting real family life.

Choosing the Right Edinburgh Photoshoot Location
The best location depends on your family’s personality and the type of memories you want to capture.
- Love adventure? Choose Arthur’s Seat or Holyrood Park.
- Prefer elegant city charm? Stockbridge and Circus Lane are perfect.
- Want nature and space for kids to run? Cammo Estate or Lauriston Castle work beautifully.
- Prefer beaches and views of the sea? Head to Cramond or South Queensferry.
No matter which location you choose, the goal is always the same: relaxed, natural photographs that genuinely reflect your family connection.
